Note-Taking System
Dear Otto,
Don't worry! I did not betray you, but Grizzly Bear did provide a kick-ass note-taking system! Maybe you can compromise with him and rename it "SU/Cornell Note-Taking System." Anyways, I will give you a brief overview of this magical system that has taught me how to take efficient notes.
First, on your piece of paper draw a vertical line 2 1/2 inches away from the left side of your sheet of paper. This is your recall column. Second, trace the first horizontal line on the top of your sheet of paper. This will create a summary box. Before Class, draw the format. During Class, record as many notes as you can on the large box. After Class, 1.) Reread your notes. 2.) Reduce your notes on the left column, by writing important key terms or keywords that will help you recall information. 3.) Summarize your class notes a day later or two on your box at the top of your sheet of paper. 4.) Review te recall column and the summary box.
This technique works for me because it forces me to make a small summary of what I have learned in class. Also, I like to quiz myself by synthesizing the information I learn into my own words. It proves how much I have learned.
Now, there is another note-taking technique called the 1 Plus 3 Note-Taking Method, but I did not find it as efficient compared to the Cornell Note-Taking System. It took me a very long time to complete the entire process for all my nutrition notes, about 3hrs!
This is the procedure: First, write your notes only on one side of the notebook. During class, record your notes in any format you desire. After class, reread your notes. On the opposite page of your notes, divide the blank page into 3 sections. I will provide you an illustration of how to correctly divide the sections. In the first box located on the top left, write key terms or concepts. On the second box, located on the top right, create a graphic organizer. On the bottom rectangular section, write test questions that you think your instructor will ask. REVIEW WEEKLY!
I incorporated the powerpoint-notes taking technique to the 1 Plus 3 Note-Taking System, by stapling my slides on the right side of a sheet of paper of my notebook. I printed four slides on one page. I wrote notes from the lecture on the blank space. Then, I did the graphic organizer, key term list and questions on the other side. I plan to also, make note-cards.
Ok, Otto I have shared with you two different note-taking strategies; please use one!
Sincerely,
Mayra Najera
